Celtic should have moved for Liverpool’s Ragnar Klavan.

Celtic’s centre-back troubles were exposed this week when Jack Hendry and Jozo Simunovic were shown up in Athens.

Brendan Rodgers’ side crashed out of the Champions League at the qualifying phase, with the manager bemoaning poor transfer activity.

There is little excuse then, for missing out on a bargain defender from his former club Liverpool.

Ragnar Klavan is on the verge of sealing a transfer from Liverpool to Cagliari for just £2 million, Goal report.

Klavan was signed by Liverpool two seasons ago after impressing against the Reds for Augsburg in the Europa League.

The Estonian defender would be the first to recognise that he is no Paolo Maldini, but he has been a surprisingly solid option for Liverpool since signing, the definition of dependable, when fans were prepared to write him off before he had even started.

Judged capable of starting 16 Premier League and three Champions League games last season, Klavan is now going to have to take on the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain in Serie A.

Overlooking the chance to sign Klavan for just £2 million is another mistake from Celtic this summer, who could have brought in the defender earlier if they had identified him as a target.
