Celtic have reservations about appointing former Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch as Ange Postecoglou’s replacement at the Scottish Premiership champions.

Or, at least, so says the Daily Record.

When Jesse Marsch was first linked with the Celtic job a couple of years back, he was thriving on the Champions League stage with Red Bull Salzburg, giving Liverpool a run for their money alongside a little-known centre-forward by the name of Erling Haaland.

“Jesse and I had a great relationship. We still talk on the phone sometimes. He was an amazing manager for me, and we had some great memories together,” the now-Manchester City superstar told CBS of his former boss.

“I am lucky to have gotten to know him as a coach, but also as a person. He was very good with me. As you saw, I was very happy on and off the pitch in Salzburg. Even though it was just six months, it was a good time. He is an amazing guy.”

Flash forward to the summer of 2023 however, and Marsch’s reputation – and his career, for that matter – is in a very different place.

Is Jesse Marsch still an option for Celtic?

Sky Sports report that the 49-year-old American is under consideration by Celtic. But his ill-fated spells at RB Leipzig and Leeds United do not exactly reflect well on a man who has twice already failed to build upon the foundations laid down by an elite-level coach beloved by the fanbase.

Marsch lasted just 11 months at Elland Road. His time at Leipzig ended even sooner. And, according to the Daily Record, Celtic are aware of potential ‘red flags’ when it comes to hiring a man who held talks with Leicester City and Southampton following his sacking by Leeds in February.

Those reservations are likely to revolve around the fact that, in both of his previous jobs, the Wisconsin-born coach inherited a side used to playing a detailed, possession-based style and diluted it, instead creating a one-dimensional, kick-and-rush, high-pressing-and-nothing-else side who would run ferociously when they didn’t have the ball but appeared to have no idea of what to do when they did have it.

Marsch has won just 19 games out of 58 since leaving Salzburg in 2021.

According to Sky Sports, former Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers is also under consideration as Ange Postecoglou prepares to be unveiled by Tottenham Hotspur.

Kjetil Knutsen is going nowhere however; committing his immediate future to Norwegian challengers Bodo/Glimt.
