Former Celtic hero Scott Brown could take a first step into management – by replacing ex-Bhoys defender Stephen Crainey at Fleetwood Town.

Brown left Celtic at the end of last season and decided to move on to Scottish Premiership rivals Aberdeen.

Brown wanted to join up with his former Hibs teammate Stephen Glass, taking on a coaching role at Pittodrie alongside his playing duties.

However, Glass was sacked earlier this year and Brown left Aberdeen with immediate effect.

The 36-year-old is now without a club and it’s unclear whether he will continue to play or go into management.

Now, The Scottish Sun report that Brown is a shock name in the frame to become Fleetwood Town boss.

Fleetwood stayed up in League One on the final day of the season despite a 4-2 defeat to Bolton Wanderers.

The Cod Army only avoided relegation by goal difference though and it’s clear that the club need something new.

After the success of Uwe Rosler, Fleetwood have struggled for a long-term solution.

Joey Barton tried and failed whilst Simon Grayson wasn’t able to produce his usual League One heroics.

Current boss Stephen Crainey is only in charge until the summer, meaning Fleetwood now have a chance to move on and find a new boss.

That could be Brown in a strange turn of events given that Crainey himself is a former Celtic player.

Crainey and Brown never crossed paths for Celtic but they did play together for Scotland.

We could now see Brown take over from Crainey at Fleetwood; whether the former left back would be willing to reunite with Brown on his coaching staff remains to be seen.

Some expected Brown’s managerial start to come in Scotland but it could instead be in England as Fleetwood eye a shock deal.
