James McCarthy has reiterated his love for Celtic today.

James McCarthy of Everton arrives for the Everton v Gor Mahia friendly match at Goodison Park on November 6, 2018 in Liverpool, England.

Some Celtic fans haven’t reacted well to James McCarthy’s comments about wanting a return to the Premiership at some point.

The Crystal Palace midfielder revealed via The Record that he was mad about Celtic growing up and admitted that he would love to play in an Old Firm derby.

He said: “I’ve always been a Celtic fan; all my family are Celtic fans. I’d always be at the game [against Rangers]. It’s an amazing atmosphere, an incredible atmosphere and one that you really enjoy. You always find you want to play in something like that. “

McCarthy, who was born in Glasgow, left Hamilton to join Wigan in 2009 and has since established himself as a very talented Premier League player.

But it looks like the 28-year-old – who earns £50,000 in London [Spotrac] – still has a soft spot for the club he used to watch at Parkhead, and he was even on the Bhoys’ books at youth level before being rejected [The Irish Independent].

However, McCarthy, a Republic of Ireland international, doesn’t appear to be welcome back to Lennoxtown by some Celtic fans on Twitter.

Here’s how they reacted to his comments:

Neil Lennon has an abundance of quality midfielders at his disposal now, to the point where McCarthy wouldn’t be needed, but longer term, when Scott Brown’s influence begins to wane, the Scotland-born star might’ve been an asset at Paradise.
