Celtic paid tribute to Billy McNeill on Tuesday, as it marked two-year anniversary of the club’s emotional farewell to the former Bhoys captain.

McNeill is widely considered to be the greatest captain in Celtic’s history and, quite simply, one of the greatest players to ever don the famous green and white hoops.

He passed away on the 22nd of April 2019, and Celtic’s next game came five days later as they took on Kilmarnock at Parkhead.

Fans paid tribute to McNeill, and Jozo Simunovic popped up to score the winner in a 1-0 victory, as Celtic’s number five scored with 67 minutes on the clock in a quite remarkable moment.

Simunovic will forever be remembered for that emotional goal, and he took to Twitter on Tuesday to post ‘Hail Cesar’ in reference to McNeill.

The 26-year-old turned out 129 times for Celtic, but was released last summer after years of injury problems – and he still finds himself without a club.

The Croatian remains popular with Celtic fans though, partly because of that famous goal against Killie, and some want him back.

Fans took to Twitter to send messages to Simunovic begging for him to return to Parkhead, believing that him still being a free agent is ‘criminal’.

Some want him to come home and bolster Celtic’s defence, which is certainly needed this summer.

Shane Duffy is heading back to Brighton and Hove Albion after a dismal season, whilst Kristoffer Ajer is being linked away from the club.

Christopher Jullien has endured injury problems and Hatem Abd Elhamed has already left, so there is room for one, two or even three centre backs to come in.

Simunovic could be cheap cover at the back for Celtic, though it does seem very unlikely that they would look to re-sign him a year since letting him leave for nothing.
