Celtic fans are keen for Filip Benkovic to stay, after his comments at his latest press conference.

Benkovic has joined Celtic on loan from Leicester City, and he has wasted no time making an impression.

The £13 million centre-back (Sky Sports) has stepped into Brendan Rodgers’ defence and quickly made the Bhoys look a much more solid outfit.

And his comments today have offered hope to Celtic supporters that a permanent deal could be on.

He said: “Europa League games are very important. We are playing at a high level against top teams. I can learn a lot and my goal is to play every year in top European competitions.”

Bekonvic also went on to suggest that he didn’t want to be recalled from his spell at Parkhead by Leicester in January.

“Leicester can take me back in January but my wish is to stay at Celtic all season,” the centre-back added.

“I came here to win trophies and to help the team. The least I can do is give everything I have on the pitch.”

And Celtic supporters feel that Benkovic’s best chance of playing in Europe comes if he stays at Parkhead, rather than if returns to Leicester.

Leicester were playing Champions League football only two years ago, but their chances of getting back into Europe’s top competition do appear slim now.

Celtic, on the other hand, have made it into the Champions League for two of the three seasons that Brendan Rodgers has been at the club.

The Bhoys are in the Europa League this term, and can make it through to the knockout stages with a win on Thursday evening against Red Bull Salzburg.

Filip Benkovic of Celtic arrives at the stadium prior to the UEFA Europa League Group B match between Celtic and Rosenborg at Celtic Park on September 20, 2018 in Glasgow, United Kingdom.
