The Hoops ace featured in the Old Firm derby but didn’t make the squad for the follow-up Scottish Premiership game.

Celtic continued their march towards the Scottish Premiership title with their 2-0 win away at St Mirren on Wednesday night.

After both the Hoops and their second-placed Glasgow rivals won on Wednesday, Neil Lennon’s charges sit 13 points clear at the top with just six games left and could win the title as early as this weekend (BBC Sport).

Looking closer at the game against the Buddies, there was however one notable omission which is sure to concern some Celtic fans – and indeed, some wondered where he was – namely that of Jonny Hayes.

The 31-year-old put in a solid shift in Sunday’s Old Firm triumph at Parkhead, making good runs up and down the left side in the 45 minutes he was on, before being taken off as a precaution due to his yellow card.

Neil Lennon said after the game (Scottish Sun) that Hayes’s inclusion was to “lighten the load” on Kieran Tierney, but against St Mirren, Emilio Izaguirre was selected instead, with Hayes missing out on the squad altogether.

Some eagle-eyed Celtic fans took to Twitter after the squad announcement to have their say:

Judging by the reaction, it seems as though many fans are also none the wiser in terms of why Hayes was omitted, so it is a space that certainly needs to be watched.
