A number of Celtic fans have taken to Twitter to comment on a club post about Callum McGregor which was well-intentioned but appears to have backfired.

The 26-year-old Scotland international played a jaw-dropping 69 games last season, 59 for the Hoops and 10 for his country, as mentioned on the Scottish Premiership club’s website.

McGregor’s club-and-country appearance tally puts his third behind Philippe Coutinho with Brazil and Barcelona (70 games) and Jesus Gallardo with Mexico and Monterrey (72 games).

However, the Parkhead academy graduate is top of the list when it comes to minutes of competitive football played last term, an astounding 5,894 minutes which began on 10 July 2018 and ended on 11 June 2019.

McGregor’s tally puts him ahead of Ajax defender Daley Blind (5,819 minutes) and Ruben Dias of Benfica (5,790 minutes), which on the surface seems like something to be celebrated – Celtic’s social media team certainly thought so.

However, a number of Bhoys on the social media platform saw the amount of competitive minutes played by McGregor in 2018-19 as a sign of resources being stretched to the limit, and criticised the club for the post:
