A number of Celtic fans have taken to Twitter to implore Brendan Rodgers to drop Mikael Lustig from the Hoops side after the Scottish Premiership champions lost 3-1 to Red Bull Salzburg in the Europa League group-stages.

After beating Rosenborg in their group opener, the Bhoys would put themselves in a fantastic position with a win in Austria. And they gave themselves a fantastic chance of taking those three points as Odsonne Edouard did brilliantly well to give the visitors the early lead.

But the goal in the second minute only seemed to spark the home side into life and Celtic had to deal with a lot of pressure. And while they managed to keep Salzburg at bay before the break, the second-half was a different story.

Shortly after the hour-mark, the Austrians had turned the game on its head and led 2-1. And when James Forrest conceded a penalty and was sent off with just under 20 minutes to go, Celtic’s hopes of turning the contest around themselves were essentially dashed.

Few of Rodgers’ men impressed over the 90 minutes, but few seemed to receive the kind of criticism that Lustig – and fellow defender Jack Hendry – got on social media.

Salzburg had a lot of joy down Celtic’s right flank, and several supporters felt that Lustig did not do well enough on the night. Many are now desperate to see Rodgers leave him out of the side moving forward, with some suggesting that he is finished at Parkhead.
