Celtic defender Anthony Ralston has put pen to paper on a new contract that will see him remain with the 48-time Scottish champions until the summer of 2022 – and Hoops fans are delighted.

Celtic confirmed on their official website that Ralston had agreed new terms with the Hoops, despite going through numerous injury struggles this season.

The 19-year-old had previously entered the final 18 months of his contract on Parkhead, but Brendan Rodgers has decided that he believes the right-back is worthy of a four-and-a-half-year deal.

The one-time Scotland Under-21 has managed just 10 senior appearances for Celtic, but seven of those have come this season including 90 minutes in the 5-0 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain and a goal in the Betfred Cup against Kilmarnock.

A Celtic academy graduate, Ralston is another example to follow the likes of James Forrest, Kieran Tierney and Callum McGregor into the senior set-up.

Celtic fans reacted to the news on Twitter, with many delighted to see one of the finer products of the current academy shown faith by Rodgers. However, one fan stated Celtic should just “cut out the middle man” and sell him for “£60million”.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers arrives prior to the Scottish Premier League match between Dundee and Celtic at Dens Park on December 26, 2017 in Dundee, Scotland.
