Neil Lennon suggested that he would like to see Mikael Lustig sign a new contract at Celtic.
A number of Celtic fans have taken to Twitter to react to recent comments made by Neil Lennon – which have been reported by the Daily Record – where he suggested that he would like to see Mikael Lustig sign a new contract with the Hoops.
Lustig is a hero for the Parkhead faithful, but there was a lot of delight amongst the fans when Jeremy Toljan arrived on loan from Borussia Dortmund during the January transfer window.
The Sweden international’s form has dipped over the last 12 months and there have been plenty of doubts amongst the supporters regarding whether Celtic should hand the 32-year-old a new contract with his current deal set to expire in the summer.
Lustig made just two appearances in February. But interim boss Lennon handed the defender the chance to play the full 90 minutes against Hibernian earlier this month, and he has since suggested that he would like to see Lustig stay beyond the summer (via Daily Record) despite his own future remaining uncertain.
But, while Lustig is clearly incredibly popular amongst the supporters and Toljan’s form has dipped more recently, it appears that there are not many Celtic fans who agree with Lennon.
There is some backing for a new deal – he could surely have a role to play even if he was not first-choice next year – but it appears that the majority believe that this summer would be a good time to let the club hero move on, perhaps before he taints his legacy further.
