Celtic boss Neil Lennon was keen to bring Victor Wanyama back to Parkhead.
Celtic were busy in the dying embers of the summer transfer window, but it seems that they still missed out on one potential signing.
The Bhoys landed Moritz Bauer, Mohamed Elyounoussi, Greg Taylor, Jeremie Frimpong and Lee O’Connor in a late transfer flurry, bolstering Neil Lennon’s squad.
Those signings should make an impact now or in the future, but one player seemingly slipped through Celtic’s net late in the window.
The Daily Record reported that Celtic were pursuing a loan deal for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama, but were hoping to a significant wage contribution from Spurs.
That didn’t happen, and the 28-year-old now remains at Spurs where he is completely out of favour under Mauricio Pochettino, with a January exit likely.
Celtic may well try again, as boss Lennon has told The Scottish Sun that a summer deal for Wanyama ‘didn’t get off the ground’, but didn’t rule out a January bid.
Lennon signed Wanyama for Celtic in 2011 before he moved on to Southampton just two years later, and a return to Parkhead could be emotional for the Kenyan star.
Celtic fans have now been taking to Twitter to react, believing that Wanyama is ‘coming home’ in January and would be a ‘game changer’ of a signing, even suggesting that he could be Scott Brown’s replacement in the Celtic midfield.
