Another win for Celtic takes them even further clear at the top but it wasn’t all smooth sailing on the night.
On the face of it, the two-up-top experiment worked rather well for Brendan Rodgers and Celtic on Tuesday night. Leigh Griffiths, undisputed star striker last season, alongside Moussa Dembele, first choice centre-forward this, lined up alongside each other for only the sixth time against Hamilton Academical, with the winning goal straight out of the Cole/Yorke textbook.
Carving open the Accies’ defence, a perfectly weighted pass set Dembele away to square in the most unselfish manner for Griffiths to fire in the winner. So is this the dawning of a brand new strike partnership destined to make the runaway leaders even more clinical in front of goal?
Not quite. Across 90 minutes, Tuesday’s narrow win at Celtic Park was arguably their most disjointed performance of the season and, apart from those few seconds of matchwinning link-up play, the Dembele-Griffiths axis struggled to click into gear.
The prospect of combining two players who have scored a combined tally of 12 Scottish Premiership goals in 21 games could take Celtic to another level on paper. Tactically, however, Rodgers has some work to do in order to shoehorn his two prolific goalscorers into the same system.
