Plenty of Celtic fans are convinced that they have just seen Jonny Hayes’ best display for the Hoops as he starred at left-back in their Scottish Cup victory over St Johnstone on Sunday.

With Kieran Tierney coming back from injury and Emilio Izaguirre joining him on the sidelines following the midweek win against Hibernian, Hayes was given a chance to start in defence for the cup tie.

It has not been an easy time at Parkhead for the former Aberdeen star. Injury and unconvincing form has meant that he is still working on winning the majority of the Celtic fans over more than 18 months after his arrival.

But his display this weekend could certainly be the turning point the 31-year-old has been desperately looking for.

Hayes was excellent and provided the assist for James Forrest’s goal in the 5-0 win. And many of the Celtic fans lauded the winger on social media after the full-time whistle.

St Johnstone are not some minnows who were simply looking to enjoy a day out at Celtic Park. Their form has been poor of late, but they find themselves in the top six in the Scottish Premiership, so Hayes’ display is certainly reason for encouragement.
