Celtic defender Dedryck Boyata featured for Belgium at the World Cup on Monday, as the former Manchester City centre-back lined up alongside Tottenham Hotspur duo Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen in their opening match against Panama.
Injury to City defender Vincent Kompany saw Boyata get the chance to start in Belgium’s opening Group G fixture against Panama on Monday afternoon.
The 27-year-old defender started the match and played for the entire 90 minutes, as Roberto Martinez’s side won 3-0.
Boyata – who cost the Glasgow giants £1.5 million in transfer fees when they signed him from City in the summer of 2015, according to BBC Sport – did well at the back for Belgium, who will be aiming to go all the way at the World Cup in Russia this summer.
Celtic fans were following the match, and they were impressed with the shift put in by Boyata.
The 27-year-old centre-back is a key figure in Brendan Rodgers’s team at Celtic Park, but the Belgium international is prone to making mistakes from time to time.
