Celtic have been linked with Everton defender Phil Jagielka.

Phil Jagielka of Everton celebrates his goal during the Premier League match between Everton and Arsenal at Goodison Park on April 7, 2019 in Liverpool, England.

Celtic are in the market for defensive reinforcements this summer, and Phil Jagielka is one name that has been linked in the last 24 hours.

The Bhoys will lose Dedryck Boyata on a free transfer to Hertha Berlin, whilst loanee Filip Benkovic is returning to Leicester City, leaving Neil Lennon without two major defenders.

Celtic won’t even get any money in for either player, so targeting a free agent to come in may not be a bad idea for the Bhoys this summer.

As a result, The Sun reported on Wednesday that Jagielka is on the Celtic radar, with a new move expected having failed to sign him from Everton in January.

There are conflicting reports though, as The Express claim that Celtic will only move for the 36-year-old if their other centre back targets fall through.

Jagielka announced on Tuesday that he’s leaving Everton when his contract expires this summer, and he should still find a club quickly having featured in seven Premier League games this past season.

Celtic fans aren’t impressed though, believing that signing Jagielka would show a complete lack of ambition, feeling it will be a long summer if this is the calibre of player Celtic are going for.

Others do think Jagielka would be a good signing for the Bhoys, but the general consensus is that Celtic need more imaginative ideas than signing veteran free agents if they’re to progress in the Champions League.
