It is fair to say that Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor has not always generated plaudits from Bhoys supporters, with some questioning his place in the side.

However, against Rangers this weekend the 23-year-old emphatically proved he has what it takes to start regularly for Brendan Rodgers’ team.

McGregor played an integral role in Celtic’s 5-1 victory away to the Gers, ensuring Pedro Caixinha’s side returned to the drawing board after back-to-back defeats against their fierce rivals.

The latest was the most embarrassing, happening at Ibrox and cementing Celtic’s position at the top of the pecking order for a while yet.

McGregor scored the third goal on the day, adding to earlier strikes from Scott Sinclair and Leigh Griffiths and laying the groundwork for later goals from defenders Dedryck Boyata and Mikael Lustig.
