Giorgos Giakoumakis has endured a tricky start to life since joining Celtic last summer, but he is starting to find his feet and arguably produced his best display in a Celtic shirt on Wednesday. Celtic fans are impressed.
The 27-year-old striker was handed just his 11th appearances for the Hoops since completing a £2.5million (Sun) move to Scotland from Dutch side VVV-Venlo. Injuries, and a lack of momentum, have so far hampered his form.
But on Wednesday night at Tynecastle, he looked as though he had been playing for Celtic for years. The Greece international netted his third goal in green and white, as the Hoops narrowly held on to a 2-1 win.
New signing Reo Hatate continued his stunning start to life at Celtic – in a makeshift midfield alongside Nir Bitton and Matt O’Riley. He blasted a 30-yard effort into the corner, though Craig Gordon should have saved it.
The second came moments later. Nice play from Hatate found O’Riley, and the new signings’s low cross was expertly flicked into the net by Giakoumakis. A superb finish, though there were hints of an offside.
Celtic could easily have thrown away the win. Liam Boyce scored with a neat finish under Joe Hart and after a handball, had the chance to make it 2-2 from the spot. He sent Hart the wrong way, but the ball hit the post.
Though somewhat lucky, Celtic secured all three points with Giakoumakis earning rave reviews from his club’s fans on Twitter. Many praised his display, while a few fans were reminded of Moussa Dembele.
