The Hoops ace commented on two controversial penalty incidents for Neil Lennon’s side but some Bhoys faithful weren’t having any of it.
A number of Celtic fans have taken to Twitter to respond to Ryan Christie’s comments about two instances in the 1-1 Scottish Premiership draw against Hibernian yesterday in which he felt the Hoops could and should have been awarded penalties (official Celtic website).
The Bhoys went behind early on at Easter Road when a Christian Doidge shot was deflected by Kristoffer Ajer past Fraser Forster after only eight minutes, but the Hoops equalised in the 24th minute when Moritz Bauer’s cross was headed home by Christie for his 11th goal of the season.
However, were two controversial moments which Celtic boss Neil Lennon claimed after the game that they should have yielded penalties – Christie being brought down in the box in the second half, before Bauer was up-ended by Daryl Horgan at the byline as the Bhoys pressed for a winner (The Scotsman).
Christie echoed his manager’s sentiments, telling the official Celtic website: “It was a stonewall penalty and it was frustrating because at that stage in the match we were very much on top. But I think because I ended up getting a cross away, that’s probably why the referee didn’t give it – they just seemed to try and play on.
“But, for me, it was a definite penalty and everyone could see that. It reminded me of one that we got against us at Pittodrie last season, when Emilio Izaguirre slid in on Niall McGinn. It was very similar and it was given then. You just have to realise that it was a late challenge and I can tell you for sure that if that was outside the box it would definitely be given as a free-kick. So it was frustrating not to get either of them.”
However, numerous Parkhead faithful disagreed with Christie on social media, pointing out that they put in what they felt was a lacklustre performance against one of the division’s current strugglers – here is some of the reaction:
