Paul Scholes made headlines on Sunday with comments about Celtic’s Scott Brown.

Celtic's Scott Brown celebrates scoring their fifth goal

Speaking to The Daily Record, Paul Scholes has questioned whether Celtic legend Scott Brown would have been as effective in the Premier League as he has been in the Scottish Premiership down the years.

The 31-year-old midfielder captained Celtic to a domestic treble without losing a match this past season to cement his place as a Parkhead great.

The Scotland international, who joined for a club-record £4.4 million from Hibernian in 2007, has won a total of 13 major honours during his 10-year stint in Glasgow.

It is always asked of the best players in Scotland whether or not they would succeed in England’s top flight, but Scholes, a two-time Champions League winner with Manchester United, has suggested to The Daily Record that Brown would not be as influential south of the border as he is up north.

“Scott is in the right place. He’s a real leader. I’ve watched him over the years in the Celtic team but it’s hard to gauge the level of the Scottish game compared to down here. Scott has had a fantastic career with Celtic.

“But could he have done the same with a big club down in England? I’m not sure he’d have had the same influence.”

Celtic fans reacted on Twitter to Scholes’s comments and suffice to say a lot of them disagreed with the United icon.

Brown also has 60 European appearances for Celtic under his belt.
