A number of Celtic fans have taken to Twitter to praise Mikael Lustig’s display during the Hoops’ stunning 5-1 win at Parkhead against Kilmarnock at the weekend.

Lustig has not enjoyed the best season so far. The right-back has struggled at times, and there have been a few occasions where many of the fans have taken to social media to implore Brendan Rodgers to replace him in the near future.

The Scottish Sun recently reported he is out of contract in the summer and has AIK considering a potential approach for the right-back. And while some may have initially given their backing to the idea of this summer being the right time to let him leave, that appears to have changed in recent weeks.

Lustig’s form has picked up again in the last few games, and it has culminated in an excellent performance during the Bhoys’ superb victory over Killie that has taken Rodgers’ men back to the top of the Scottish Premiership.

The 32-year-old – who earns £24,000-a-week, according to the Daily Star – scored a very well-taken volley during the first-half dismantling of the then-league leaders. And winger Jordan Jones barely got a sniff in their own battle as Celtic cruised to the three points that would have sent another warning to all of their rivals.

Many fans on social media noted how well Lustig has responded to criticism over the last month, and praised the right-back for continuing to impress while wearing the captain’s armband in Scott Brown’s absence. It certainly appears that most will now be hoping that he is awarded a new contract.
