Marvin Compper appears to have left Celtic with cult-hero status after making just one appearance in 19 months.

A number of Celtic fans have taken to Twitter to react to the news that has been confirmed by BBC Sport that Marvin Compper has left the Hoops to join Duisburg this summer.

Compper has somehow managed to earn something of a cult-hero status at Parkhead. BBC Sport reports that he cost the Bhoys £1 million when he arrived from RB Leipzig in January 2018.

He went on however, to make just one appearance for Celtic’s first-team – the same number of caps he has collected for Germany. The writing had long been on the wall for his future with the Scottish Premiership champions, so it will come as no surprise to the Hoops fans that he has moved.

The centre-back has joined Duisburg, who will be playing in Germany’s third tier next season after they were relegated last season. The news has prompted an interesting response amongst the Celtic fans on social media.

Often when poor signings leave a club, the fans tend to take the opportunity to celebrate their exit or vent their frustration at the hierarchy for getting them in in the first place.

But the reaction to Compper’s move away from Scotland has been comical – nicely mirroring how bad a piece of business it was for Celtic to sign the defender last January. Compper appears to have an odd sort of popularity and seems to have secured his spot in Celtic folklore thanks to an incredible win-rate.
