Celtic will be without Jozo Simunovic for their first two Scottish Premiership games of the season.
A number of Celtic fans have expressed their anger on Twitter after it was reported by the Daily Record that Jozo Simunovic has been banned for the first two Scottish Premiership games of the season after being sent off during a pre-season friendly.
Simunovic was dismissed for a nasty challenge during the Hoops’ clash with St Gallen. The centre-back made contact with an opponent’s head after raising his boot to challenge for the ball.
Unsurprisingly, the 24-year-old was handed his marching orders during the game. But it has now emerged that the challenge has landed Simunovic in further trouble.
The Daily Record reports that he will miss the league games against St Johnstone and Motherwell after being suspended for two matches. And the news has attracted plenty of criticism from the Celtic supporters on social media.
Of course, the challenge from Simunovic was strong enough to deserve a red card in a pre-season friendly. It was clearly reckless and perhaps there was reason for further punishment – whether that be a fine or a suspension during the remaining weeks of pre-season.
But the Celtic fans are extremely disappointed that a red card in a pre-season friendly is going to result in a suspension for the centre-back in two competitive fixtures. It is difficult not to feel some sympathy for Neil Lennon’s men over the situation.
