Celtic are reportedly keen to sign Basel defender Silvan Widmer.

Celtic have snapped up one right back in Hatem Abd Elhamed, but the Bhoys are still in the market for one more addition there.

Mikael Lustig and Cristian Gamboa both moved on this summer, leaving Lennon with a lack of options in the position – so much so that Kristoffer Ajer played there against FK Sarajevo.

Israel international Abd Elhamed has now arrived to ease the problems, but one more right back is still needed to compete Lennon’s options.

The Scottish Daily Mail (24/07 print edition, page 82) reported that Celtic are now keen on signing Basel ace Silvan Widmer, as he’s one option alongside Robert Gumny and Antonio Barragan.

Widmer is certainly an exciting proposition, as the 26-year-old has experience in Serie A with Udinese as well as international experience with Switzerland.

Widmer only joined Basel from Udinese last summer, but impressed with two goals and seven assists last season, sparking Celtic’s interest.

The rumour gained even more traction when Elliott Fillingham – an agent from Widmer’s representation Base Soccer – posted a photo from Parkhead last week.

Most fans are hugely excited by such a move, believing that Widmer is more polished than Gumny and has more of a future than Barragan, believing he’s the best option of the three.

Others want a deal announced as soon as possible, believing that Widmer will be ‘class’ and ‘gold’ if signed, even suggesting that Celtic should sign him and Gumny, converting Abd Elhamed to centre back full time.
