Celtic fans have been reacting on Twitter after it was announced that Stuart Armstrong has completed his move to Premier League side Southampton for a £6 million fee, as reported by the Evening Times.

Armstrong’s future has been the subject of speculation for a long time now. The 26-year-old was superb during Brendan Rodgers’ first season at Parkhead and the Hoops managed to put a temporary end to the rumours last summer by agreeing a new contract with the midfielder.

Stuart Armstrong of Celtic (R) shoots at goal during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Celtic and Rangers at Celtic Park on March 12, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

However, after a much less spectacular season last term, questions surrounding his situation began again and the Daily Record reported earlier this month that he intended to leave amid reports linking him with a number of English clubs.

And it has now been confirmed that he has joined Southampton, following in the footsteps of the likes of Fraser Forster, Victor Wanyama and Virgil van Dijk who have made the same move in recent years.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is seen during a training session at Lennoxtown Training Centre on April 27, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

The news has obviously not come as a major surprise to Celtic fans with the move on the cards for several days. But it has still prompted plenty of debate on social media.

Some have thanked Armstrong for the contribution that he has made, and some have suggested it is a blow, but it appears that the majority of the supporters now want Rodgers to get stuck into the transfer market with no new faces arriving thus far. Odsonne Edouard and Scott Bain have seen their loans turned into permanent deals, but the fans want signings in quickly following Armstrong’s departure.
