Mikael Lustig is reportedly interested in leaving Celtic in the January transfer window and moving back to his home country of Sweden with AIK – and Hoops fans are desperate to see the back of the defender.

Swedish outlet FotbollDirekt have claimed that AIK are interested in offering the 73-time Sweden international a route back to the country – a decade after he left to join Rosenborg in 2008, before joining Celtic in 2012.

Versatile defender Lustig’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season and it has been noticed by fans that his level of performance is beginning to drop, as he turns 32 next month.

A new contract does not seem to be on the horizon for Lustig, though the defender did speak out earlier this month on his future, stating: “I have a contract with Celtic and I think I’ll play there next year too.”

Celtic have little other option at right-back and the loss of Lustig may convince Brendan Rodgers to enter the January transfer window for a new right-sided defender.

Cristian Gamboa is hardly considered the answer to Lustig, with his contract also set to expire in the summer. Anthony Ralston failed to impress on loan at Dundee United last season.

Celtic fans reacted to the news that AIK were interested in Lustig, with fans stating that it is time for the experienced defender to leave Parkhead.
