Celtic fans have slammed comments from Scottish Football Association chief Alan McRae calling for a strong Rangers.

McRae told the Sunday Times this week that he believes while Celtic’s unbeaten season was a huge achievement, it would be damaging for the Scottish game if it was to happen again.

He discussed the notion that he wants a bigger challenge for Celtic, but controversially he singled out Rangers as the club he wants to provide it.

He said: “They have done it once [gone unbeaten], hopefully it won’t happen again next season because we’ve got to have challengers.

“They know you need to have people challenging, otherwise it will get very boring and dreary.

“We definitely need a good, strong Rangers, they are back, but they still have a bit to go. I’m sure they will eventually.”

McRae’s comments have been panned not only by Celtic fans but by supporters of rivals clubs, who feel the SFA figurehead should be more impartial in his comments.

Rangers did not even finish second to Celtic last season, ending the season in third place, equidistant in points between second placed Aberdeen and fourth place St Johnstone.

The Gers have been pushing hard in the transfer market early on to try and set themselves up for a better season in 2017/18. Whether they have anywhere near enough quality to get near to Celtic is another matter.
