Celtic and James McClean. An ideal match?
Just because James McClean is a self-confessed, Bhoyhood Celtic supporter, that doesn’t mean he will be donning green and white next season and aiding the club’s ambitions for seven in a row.
Yet, the Republic of Ireland winger must have known it was not going to pass fans by when he decided to reveal his allegiance to The Hoops before they sealed another Scottish Premiership title in fine style on Sunday, battering Hearts 5-0 at Tynecastle.
West Brom boss Tony Pulis admitted to the Birmingham Mail that he would ‘have a chat’ with the unruly winger but, just two days later, started him in Tuesday’s clash with Watford at Vicarage Road. Clearly, there are no prevailing issues between player and manager.
And, as of yet, there does not appear to be any ulterior motive to McClean actions. He doesn’t seem to be angling for a move to Celtic – more just publically backing his club. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
Yet, Brendan Rodgers is set to lose Manchester City loanee Patrick Roberts at the end of the season. And, according to the Scottish Sun, they are far from certain to land Bournemouth’s Emerson Hyndman (below) with Nottingham Forest also expressing an interest in the 20-year-old currently thriving at Rangers.
Therefore, there may be space in Celtic’s squad for a jet-heeled winger. And the supporters would welcome McClean with open arms if they opportunity to ‘bring him home’ does indeed present itself.
