Celtic started Callum McGregor against Barcelona in the Champions League last night.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has praised Callum McGregor for putting in a strong performance against Barcelona last night.

McGregor was selected to start down the right hand side for Celtic, as they looked to protect themselves against Neymar’s threat.

And although Celtic fell to a 2-0 defeat against Barca, the former Notts County loanee impressed Rodgers with his versatility.

The manager said: “Young Callum McGregor played left-back against Kilmarnock & tonight he played on right side against Barcelona. Did very well.”

McGregor has received plenty of game time since Rodgers took charge, with the Northern Irish boss seemingly a fan of the 23-year-old.

However, Celtic fans are less convinced that McGregor has the necessary talent to make it at Parkhead.

Most Celtic supporters reacted with bewilderment to Rodgers’ towards McGregor and suggested that he should have picked Patrick Roberts instead.

Celtic’s defeat against Barcelona means that they are now out of Europe for the season.

Celtic will finish bottom of their Champions League group, with their final match in the competition coming against Manchester City in December.
