Sunderland have released ex-Celtic defender Adam Matthews.
Celtic face a major rebuilding job this summer, and boss Neil Lennon will need to strengthen his squad in a host of areas if he’s going to push for nine in a row.
The Bhoys have issues all over the pitch despite just winning a domestic treble, and right back is emerging as possibly the biggest problem in Lennon’s squad.
Veteran duo Mikael Lustig and Cristian Gamboa are set to leave the club on free transfers this summer, whilst youngster Anthony Ralston isn’t ready to take over.
Lennon may subsequently look to bring in two right backs to overhaul the position, but finding quality options within the Celtic budget may be a difficult task.
One interesting name now available is Sunderland’s Adam Matthews, whose exit was confirmed on Tuesday with his contract at the Stadium of Light coming to an end.
The 27-year-old Welshman starred under Lennon in a strong spell at Celtic, before heading down to Sunderland in 2016, where he has struggled to make an impact.
Matthews is now available for free and certainly knows Lennon well, representing a bargain option if Celtic look for a proven option before spending a decent fee on a younger, long-term solution.
Celtic fans have been taking to Twitter to discuss the idea of Matthews coming back, with some believing that he’d fit the bill perfectly and is the answer to Celtic’s problems without spending a penny.
Others feel like Matthews has regressed since leaving Celtic in the first place, and feel that if he couldn’t get into the Sunderland side in League One, then he certainly wouldn’t get in the Celtic side.
