Some Celtic fans are ripping into Peter Lawwell on Twitter for his failure to sign John McGinn last summer.

Celtic tried and failed to sign the then-Hibernian midfielder, who wound up at Aston Villa instead.

The Hoops’ third and final bid was only in the region of £2 million [The Scotsman], and the Villans stole a march on the Scottish Premiership champions to bring him to the West Midlands for £3 million [Edinburgh News].

It looks like a huge mistake not to have gone that extra mile to sign the 25-year-old, who scored the decisive goal at Wembley on Monday as Aston Villa beat Derby County in the Championship playoff final to clinch Premier League promotion.

It was a fitting end to what was an exceptional first season at Villa Park for the Scot, who will be rubbing shoulders with the world’s finest in England’s top flight next year.

And suffice to say that some Celtic fans are furious with their chief executive over the fact that McGinn – a Bhoyhood fan – isn’t at Parkhead.
