Jeremy Toljan is reportedly leaving Borussia Dortmund for Serie A outfit Sassuolo after a poor spell in the Scottish Premiership with Celtic.

According to the Scottish Sun, there was no option in Jeremy Toljan’s contract for Celtic to make his loan move permanent at the end of the season. Not that it mattered.

Judging on how Borussia Dortmund’s forgotten man performed in Scotland, The Hoops probably wouldn’t have seized the chance to keep Toljan around anyway.

Big things were expected of a jet-heeled right-back who had joined Dortmund from Hoffenheim in 2017, shortly after helping Germany to glory in the U21 European Championships. Quick, attack minded and with one hell of a cross on him, Toljan looked every inch the player Celtic needed on the right-hand side.

But to say the 24-year-old didn’t exactly live up to expectations would be an understatement. Toljan’s forgettable spell at Celtic was summed up by the most needless of red cards in a Europa League clash against Valencia, the German picking up two stupid bookings which ended any lingering hopes The Hoops had of progressing.

It’s telling that, by the time Celtic ended the season, Toljan wasn’t even in the starting XI. Neil Lennon even left him out of the Scottish Cup final victory against Hearts.

And with Gianluca Di Marzio claiming that Sassuolo are set to sign Toljan for a potential £3.5 million, Celtic fans are questioning the sanity of the Serie A outfit.
