The Hoops will take on the Swedish champions in the Europa League playoff round, with the first leg at Parkhead next Thursday and the return on 29 August.

A number of Celtic fans have taken to Twitter to comment on the club’s post confirming AIK as their Europa League playoff round opponents.

The Hoops have been parachuted into the Europa League following their shock elimination from the Champions League at the hands of CFR Cluj in midweek, losing 5-4 on aggregate.

Neil Lennon’s side will now lock horns with the Swedish champions after they drew 1-1 with Sheriff Tiraspol to advance 3-2 on aggregate, with the first leg at Parkhead next Thursday and the return on 29 August.

AIK took the lead against the Moldovan side when Nabil Bahoui opened the scoring for the hosts, but they were made to sweat in the latter stages when Gabrijel Boban struck an equaliser with four minutes to play (BBC Sport).

Celtic’s exit from the Champions League following a poor display in Glasgow was met with criticism by most of the Bhoys faithful, who questioned such decisions as the deployment of Callum McGregor at left-back.

The Hoops announcement of their Europa League opponents on social media was met with similar criticism by the Celtic fanbase:
