The Newcastle United youngster is currently out on loan at Aberdeen despite Celtic’s efforts.

Celtic found themselves on the hunt for goalkeeper cover on transfer deadline day, with Craig Gordon expected to spend some time on the sidelines with a knee injury.

Dorus De Vries will be asked to step in for the crocked Scotland international but beyond that the Bhoys were relatively thin in the position.

In the end they snapped up Scott Bain on loan from Dundee but they were also interested in Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman. The England under-20 star was apparently of interest to Celtic, according to a report from the Scottish Daily Record. They claim Celtic tried to hijack Aberdeen’s move for the supremely talented shot-stopper.

In the end Aberdeen did get their man, with Woodman coming in to provide cover after the injury to current number one Joe Lewis.

But Celtic should try again for Woodman in the summer. Could it be he follows in the footsteps of Fraser Forster?

Newcastle have had chances to give Woodman a go in the first-team but continue to ignore him. Their signing of Martin Dubravka yesterday only solidifies the position that Woodman is not yet good enough.

Forster suffered similar trouble when he was at Newcastle and in 2010 went on loan to Celtic. He spent two successful years on loan there before joining permanently and becoming a fan favourite.

Gordon’s knee injury is a reminder of his advancing years and his past injury concerns will no doubt be a worry. Celtic must start planning for the future, with a new stopper between the posts.

Woodman is one of the most talented keepers in the United Kingdom and has a chance to prove that during his stint at Celtic’s northern rivals.

If he can do so then Celtic would be wise to try and bring him in this summer as the long-term solution to their goalkeeping position.
