As far as potential Brendan Rodgers replacements go, it wouldn’t get much better for Celtic than the Champions League-winning Spaniard.
Yes, they have been linked to Jose Mourinho, but Benitez is the dream as far as realistic appointments go.
But unfortunately for the Hoops, reports in France may make it even less likely to materialise.
French newspaper La Provence reported today that Marseille had made contact with Benitez over hiring him, if he doesn’t extend his Newcastle contract, which expires in a month.
Celtic are a big club, but so is Marseille and the prospect of working in France might be more appealing to him than Glasgow.
It seems likely that the Ligue 1 side would also be better able to satisfy financial demands than the Bhoys.
Benitez to Parkhead is the dream, but this Marseille link, coupled with the fact he could yet stay with the Magpies, means it’s becoming sort of a pipe dream.
