Emilio Izaguirre’s deal at Celtic was set to expire this summer, but the Scottish Premiership champions have activated an extension.
Celtic’s Emilio Izaguirre looks set to stay
Emilio Izaguirre has confirmed that he is set to still be playing for Celtic next season after the Hoops activated a clause in his contract, The Scottish Sun reports.
Izaguirre’s departure from Celtic had seemed inevitable this summer. His initial contract would have expired at the end of this season, and with Kieran Tierney establishing himself as the first-choice left-back within the Bhoys side, it would have surprised few if his seven year stay in Glasgow came to an end.
However, the Honduran has now confirmed that his deal has now been extended until 2018, and hinted that a move away is unlikely.
“I have one more year at Celtic. They do not want me to leave,” he said, as reported by The Scottish Sun.
“The coach tells me he wants to me stay and I will keep working hard,” he went on to add.
“If I get the chance, I will give it my all.
“Is there any possibility I could leave this summer? It’s complicated because they want me to continue and everyone treats me well.”

Though Tierney has been exceptional since emerging into the team, there is no question that having someone as good as Izaguirre in the ranks is a massive plus for Brendan Rodgers as he tries to maintain his side’s domestic dominance while also leading them back into the group-stages of the Champions League.
The 30-year-old has been a loyal servant since arriving in 2010 and rarely lets the team down when he is given the chance to play – he won a number of Player of the Season accolades during his first season with the Hoops – and keeping him in the team for next year is surely an excellent decision.
