Back in 2021, Celtic fans endured the pain of losing Jeremie Frimpong to Bayer Leverkusen, as Peter Lawwell sanctioned a £11.5m sale to Bayer Leverkusen.
The Dutchman made a name for himself in Glasgow across 51 appearances for the Bhoys, scoring three goals while also providing eight assists as he helped the Hoops win the treble in his one full season.
£11.5m was a decent return seeing as Celtic only paid £300,000 for Frimpong when signing him from Manchester City in 2019, but things could soon get even better.
What’s the story?
Well, the 21-year-old put his name up in lights on the European stage last night with an incredible display in the Champions League, as Bayer Leverkusen defeated Atlético Madrid by a 2-0 scoreline.
Frimpong assisted both goals – despite only coming off the bench in the 69th minute.
That probably doesn’t mean much to most Celtic fans, although the fact that a sell-on clause was agreed when selling the right-back to the Bundesliga side should definitely excite supporters.
The exact percentage of the sell-on clause is unknown, although The Herald confirm that one does exist, and Celtic are set to receive millions if Frimpong completes a big move – Bayern Munich are said to be interested.
On the basis of his ruthlessly efficient display, which showcased just how effective the Netherlands Under-21 international has become in the final third, we believe such a move is not far away.
Frimpong now has four goals and 13 assists in 56 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen, which is an excellent attacking return for a full-back.
Celtic could work wonders with Jeremie Frimpong money
Even if it is just a few million that comes Celtic’s way, the Hoops have already proven that they can make their money go a long way in the market.
For example, Matt O’Riley only cost £1.5m from MK Dons, whereas Reo Hatate was signed for just £1.4m from Kawasaki Frontale.
Therefore, if Frimpong moves to another club and it nets Celtic £3m – for example – the Scottish champions have already shown they can strengthen Ange Postecoglou’s squad significantly with those funds.
