Celtic wanted to sign one-time Tottenham Hotspur prospect Steven Caulker all the way back in 2010 – and QPR are willing to let him go this summer.

It’s not been the easiest couple of years for Steven Caulker.

The future looked rosy back in 2012, with the towering defender close to breaking into Tottenham Hotspur’s starting XI, representing Team GB at the London Olympics and beginning what looked set to be a fruitful international career with a debut cap against a Zlatan Ibrahimovic-inspired Sweden.

Since then, however, Caulker suffered relegation with Cardiff City and QPR before managing a combined six Premier League appearances during forgettable loan spells at Southampton and Liverpool.

And a candid interview he conducted with The Guardian highlighted the huge pressures facing modern footballers and the ease of which various vices take hold. However, it appears that Caulker’s career may be on the up again.

West London Sport claim that there is a growing expectation that Caulker will swap QPR for Celtic this summer. Still just 25 years of age, the centre-back has plenty of time on his side and the prospect of a reunion with Brendan Rodgers, his manager during an impressive 2011/12 loan season at Swansea City, bodes well.

Though this is not the first time Celtic have been linked with a move for one of the most naturally talented English defenders to emerge in the last few years. Sky Sports reported in December 2010 that Caulker’s stand out performances on loan at Bristol City had piqued the Glasgow giants interest.

At long last

They reportedly wanted to sign him loan from January until the end of the season though Robins’ boss Keith Millen, whose side hauled themselves out of the relegation zone thanks in part to Caulker’s displays, refused to consider anything other than the defender remaining at Ashton Gate until the end of the campaign.

Seven years on, with QPR looking to offload the one-time England international, it appears that Celtic could finally get their man.
