Celtic’s Under-17’s won the Glasgow Cup for the fourth year in a row on Thursday evening, beating Rangers 2-1 at Firhill – and Jack Aitchison stole the show again.

Whilst today’s Old Firm Scottish Cup semi-final clash has dominated the headlines, Celtic’s youngsters gave the Bhoys something to shout about with another Glasgow Cup success.

Ewan Henderson put Celtic in front before Matthew Shiels equalsied for Rangers, and striker Aitchison grabbed the winning goal to hand the young Hoops another trophy.

Aitchison, 17, shot to prominence on the final day of last season as he scored on his debut against Motherwell, but he has made just two first-team appearances this season.

The young forward, a Scotland Under-17 international, has been tipped for a bright future at Celtic Park, and his goal against Rangers on Thursday earned praise from Bhoys Under-17’s coach John McLaughlan.

McLaughlan told the club’s official website that Aitchison has great quality in the final third, and praised him for scoring a ‘fantastic’ goal, suggesting that there is only one outcome when he twists and turns against defenders.

“He has that quality in front of goal and as soon he gets in a one-v-one and he twists and turns, there is only one outcome, and he has put it past the goalie before he has even moved – a fantastic goal,” said McLaughlan.

With the likes of Kieran Tierney and Callum McGregor emerging from the Celtic youth setup in recent years, Celtic are now hoping that Aitchison can do the same, with reports from the Daily Mail suggesting that manager Brendan Rodgers wants to use the teenager in his first team next season.

McLaughlan’s comments will again show what a talent Celtic have at their disposal, and sum up just why Rodgers is so keen to bed him into the first team next season, having shown that he has the extra level of quality at youth level – and the striker himself will be looking to kick on under Rodgers after helping the Under-17’s to Thursday’s success.
