Ronny Deila parted company with Celtic at the end of the 2015-16 season.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell has suggested to The Times that Ronny Deila could have retained his managerial job at the club.

Deila was appointed the Celtic manager in the summer of 2014 and was in charge of the first team until the end of the 2015-16 campaign.

During his time at Celtic Park, the Norwegian boss won the Scottish Premiership title twice and the Scottish League Cup once.

Lawwell has suggested that the 41-year-old, now in charge of Valerenga, could have been in charge of the Bhoys this season had he won the treble during the 2014-15 campaign.

“I don’t know – maybe,” Lawwell told The Times while referring to Celtic’s defeat to Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup in April 2015.

“A treble would certainly have helped Ronny. He would have made history and it might have added to his confidence.

“That game was an important moment for us and for Ronny. Who knows, but it’s gone now.”

Deila did quite well in his first season at Celtic, but he simply could not get the Bhoys into the group stage of the Champions League.

Winning the league title last season was a success, but since the Bhoys had the best squad in the table, that it was almost a given.

Former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers was appointed the Celtic manager in the summer.

Celtic have already won the Scottish League Cup and are playing in the Champions League this season.
