Brendan Rodgers’s Celtic reportedly wanted to sign John McGinn before he moved to Aston Villa from Hibernian in the summer transfer window.
John McGinn of Aston Villa
Celtic’s failure to sign John McGinn from Hibernian in the summer transfer window did not go down well with some fans, as reported in The Daily Record.
McGinn joined Aston Villa in the Championship in England in the summer transfer window for a fee reported by The Times to be worth £2.75 million.
According to BBC Sport, Celtic wanted to sign the Scotland international midfielder, but Brendan Rodgers’s side missed out.
While the 24-year-old started life at Villa brilliantly, the Hoops struggled in the opening weeks of the season, losing ground in the Scottish Premiership and failed to progress to the group stage of the Champions League.
Celtic, though, have rediscovered their best form, at least in Scotland, and McGinn is not being missed due to the stunning performances of Callum McGregor.
McGinn has been considered as the long-term replacement for Scott Brown in the Celtic midfield, but in the absence of the 33-year-old former Scotland international midfielder due to injury, McGregor has stepped up.

The performances of the 25-year-old central midfielder for the Hoops in the Scottish Premiership and in the Europa League have been very encouraging.
According to Transfermarkt.com, McGregor has scored one goal and provided three assists in 12 Scottish Premiership appearances for the Glasgow giants so far this season.
With McGregor stepping up and showing that he can succeed Brown, Celtic can finally move on from their disappointment regarding the failed McGinn transfer.
