Rangers had to go through the Pedro Caixinha era to eventually end up with Steven Gerrard, but it all could have been so different.
Back when Rangers were hunting for a manager after Caixinha’s exit in 2017, there was an interesting name in the mix.
ESPN reported that Ange Postecoglou wanted to become Rangers manager, with his time as Australia boss coming to an end.
Postecoglou missed out on the Ibrox job, as Rangers instead used Graeme Murty as interim boss until Gerrard came in.
Fast forward more than three years and Postecoglou is again being linked with a move to Scotland – but this time to Celtic.
The Scottish Sun claim that the Bhoys are aiming to name Postecoglou as their new manager this week having missed out on Eddie Howe.
Postecoglou is being viewed as a pretty left-field choice, given that he is currently managing in Japan with Yokohama F. Marinos and has only had one spell in European football – a brief stint with Panachaiki in Greece’s third tier in 2008.
It’s amazing how football can throw up these situations; we could have been living in a world where Postecoglou became Rangers boss, and maybe they don’t even up winning the title as they did under Gerrard.
Now, Postecoglou is preparing to be the man to take down Rangers, and Celtic will hope that he ends up proving that he is better than Gerrard after all.
