Celtic thumped the Steelmen 5-1 on Saturday to bookend a controversial recent trilogy.
Speaking to Celtic’s official website, manager Brendan Rodgers has slammed the “absolutely incredible” way in which Motherwell dealt with the controversy that surrounded Wednesday’s 1-1 draw at Fir Park.
The Steelmen had looked on course to end Celtic’s 65-match unbeaten run in domestic competition this week but Scott Sinclair slammed home an 88th-minute equaliser from the penalty spot.
It was a challenge from Andy Rose on Callum McGregor which referee Willie Collum deemed to be a foul and Sinclair made no mistake from 12 yards to preserve the Hoops’ outstanding record.
The decision from Collum was considered controversial and Rodgers claims that Motherwell’s chief executive Alan Burrows was parading around the mixed zone with a laptop to show the media that the referee got the decision wrong, a sentiment that the Northern Irishman feels betrays the club’s dignity.
“After the game on Wednesday, we have a chief executive of Motherwell, a guy in senior authority, walking around with a laptop trying to show and demonstrate to the media that it wasn’t a penalty,” he told Celtic’s official website.
“He was also in the media room, trying to show members of the media that it wasn’t a penalty and then tweets later on that evening, talking about retaining class and dignity.
“That’s not behaviour that defines and fits that. I understand Motherwell were probably hurt after the game on Sunday and that probably spills into Wednesday, but some of the nonsense that came out of there this week was absolutely incredible.”
Celtic had just beaten Motherwell 2-0 in the League Cup final, and thrashed them 5-1 at Parkhead on Saturday for what was the third meeting between the sides in just six days.
