Brendan Rodgers is reportedly among the candidates to succeed Antonio Conte at Chelsea but would the Celtic manager take it?

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has emerged as a surprise candidate to replace Antonio Conte as Chelsea boss next summer.

According to the Daily Record the Northern Irishman is the 8/1 third favourite behind Thomas Tuchel and Joachim Low to succeed Conte – who is ready to quit – at Stamford Bridge.

Rodgers has rebuilt his managerial reputation with the Bhoys after being sacked by Liverpool in October, 2015, winning the treble of Scottish Premiership, Scottish FA Cup and Scottish League Cup in 2016/17 and the Glasgow side are currently 58 games unbeaten in domestic competitions under his guidance.

The 44-year-old previously worked on the coaching staff with the Blues as well, but would he be ready to take on the top job at the West London club?

Well Rodgers’ comments when linked with the position following the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas when he was Swansea City manager in 2012 would suggest not.

“I am trying to build my career and not destroy it,” he was quoted by the Guardian when asked if he was interested in the job.

“There is so much going for Chelsea – it’s a terrific club. But you can’t continue doing what they do and have success. It does not work.

“The next manager who goes in there will have the same problems and issues. It’s a big job and demanding job – that’s how it is at the big clubs and that’s why the salaries are so high.”

That was five years ago, though, and Rodgers is known to be an ambitious character, so the Parkhead faithful should perhaps not be too convinced he wouldn’t leave for the English capital if the opportunity arose.
