Celtic manager Neil Lennon has piled the praise on goalkeeper Scott Bain, who has gone from strength to strength over the past 12 months and has been rewarded with a Scotland call-up.

In January 2018, the 27-year-old joined the Hoops on loan from Dundeea club at which he had fallen out of favour – as cover for Dorus de Vries and Craig Gordon, and impressed in his debut in a 3-2 win over Rangers.

With his contract with Dundee expiring at the end of the 2017-18 season, Bain signed a four-year contract with Celtic in May 2018, and he now finds himself as first choice at the treble-chasing club and in with a shout of filling the Scotland vacancy created by Allan McGregor’s international retirement.

Bain, along with Oliver Burke, Kieran Tierney, James Forrest and Callum McGregor, is part of the Hoops contingent which will form part of the Scotland squad for their Euro 2020 qualifiers against Kazakhstan and San Marino this week.

Lennon spoke highly of Bain in conversation with the Celtic media team, saying: “I worked with him briefly at Hibs, and I’m a big fan of his. He’s also improved a lot since he’s come here, and he’s really grown into the jersey.

“I’ll be delighted if he’s named as the No.1 at Scotland. The last year has been meteoric for Scott. He’s got nice composure about him, he’s got good hands, he’s got great agility and he’s certainly playing very well for me at the moment.”

The stopper has made 21 appearances for Celtic this season, keeping 16 clean sheets and conceding just six goals, according to Transfermarkt.
