Celtic manager Ange Postecgolou has been asked about Rangers replacing Giovanni van Bronckhorst with Michael Beale in Friday’s press conference – as per Celtic TV – and said he cares more about what he is having for dinner.

Last week, Rangers chose to axe Dutch boss van Bronckhorst. He has since been replaced by Beale, who has returned north of the border. It is a year after Beale left the club to go to Aston Villa, as Steven Gerrard’s first-team coach.

Van Bronckhorst was sacked after leaving Rangers nine points behind Celtic. The Gers have also suffered the ignominy of becoming the worst-ever performing side in the history of the Champions League group stages. Beale comes in.

Asked about his aims and the chances of reeling of Celtic in, Beale simply said that he wants the standard back – in order to aim for 56. Postecoglou was asked about the appointment of Beale, and he gave a hilarious response.

“On the scale of things that have been on my mind over the last 2 weeks, I reckon that’s registering below what I am having for dinner tonight,” Postecoglou said, when asked about the Rangers managerial situation and Beale.

Why should he care? Rangers are a long way off Celtic at the moment. They lack the strength in depth, the identity, the plan B and the precision of Celtic. Celtic look pretty much nailed on, as things stand, to win a second title in a row.

Can Beale change that? Of course he can. But he needs time, he needs money, and he needs the players to buy into what he is trying to do. But for sure, he will struggle to get any closer than Rangers are now, to their Old Firm rivals.
