Brendan Rodgers has intimated to The Glasgow Evening Times that Callum McGregor has all the qualities to one day replace the legendary Scott Brown in Celtic’s midfield.

Brown, who has led Celtic to back-to-back domestic trebles in recent years, is out of contract at Parkhead next summer, at which stage he’ll be 34.

The no-nonsense midfielder shows no sign of slowing down yet, after scooping a whole host of individual awards at the end of last season, but it is only a matter of time before Rodgers is tasked with the responsibility of identifying a long-term successor for the iconic figure.

John McGinn, who the Hoops missed out on this past summer, was touted as a potential replacement, while Rodgers himself has also talked up Eboue Kouassi as the man to take that mantle in the past.

It seems like the Celtic boss may have a new name in mind, however: McGregor.

The 25-year-old has been flourishing in a more advanced midfield role this season and bagged a wonderful assist for Tom Rogic’s goal in the 5-0 drubbing at Dundee in midweek, but his manager reckons that a deeper position might also suit him.

“He might end up there [the Brown role] but he could end up anywhere,” said Rodgers to The Glasgow Evening Times.

“It depends on the tactics of the season. Hopefully he’s at Celtic for his career but it depends what you want from the team.

“How many positions does McGregor play? He’s just got the in-built brain for football. I said to him that if Tom Brady got injured in the NFL I’d probably get a call for him to go and play quarter back.”
