Celtic sent young goalkeeper Conor Hazard on loan this week.
Speaking to Celtic’s official website, Brendan Rodgers has said he believes that Conor Hazard could be a top goalkeeper in the future, but suggested that he wouldn’t be recalling him from his loan.
The 19-year-old joined Falkirk on a half-season loan this week as he looks to pick up some experience.
Rodgers sanctioned the youngster’s move just days before Craig Gordon suffered a serious knee injury in Celtic’s 1-0 win over Hibernian on Saturday.
As a result, the Northern Irish manager now only has Dorus de Vries to call on, and Hazard might have been an option to cover the Dutchman.
But although Rodgers likes Hazard, he suggested to the Hoops’ official website that the teenager wouldn’t be recalled.
“We sent young Conor Hazard out on loan to get experience. I think he could be a very good keeper in the future for us but he needs to get the games.”
That in itself suggests that Rodgers will use the next four days of the January transfer window to find and recruit a goalkeeper to compete with De Vries for the number one shirt, but time will tell who he gets, if anyone.
De Vries, who played under the former Swansea manager in South Wales, is a decent keeper, but he’s only played once since the 7-0 mauling by Barcelona at Camp Nou 18 months ago and it’ll be interesting to see if Rodgers fancies him for the number one shirt.
