Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has a theory behind why Derek McInnes rejected Glasgow Rangers

Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers were turned down by Derek McInnes, and Celtic’s Brendan Rodgers believes he knows why.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on 22nd December on TalkSPORT, that he believes Derek McInnes rejected Rangers, because the move to Ibrox didn’t align with his own ambitions.

Rangers wanted McInnes to be Pedro Caixinha’s replacement, but the Scottish boss unexpectedly opted to stay at Aberdeen.

And Rodgers believes that McInnes’ decision was as a result of his and Rangers’ ambitions not being the same.

“When you’re a manager and you’re having to speak to the board you’re looking for alignment in terms of strategy and the interest of the club,” the Celtic boss said.

“Maybe Derek felt he was in a better place where he was at Aberdeen.

“Maybe his heart was at Rangers, being a former Rangers players, but he’s at a very good club in Aberdeen and his job looks stable and the club look ambitious.”

Rangers are now still looking for Pedro Caixinha’s permanent replacement, with Graeme Murty in temporary charge.

Murty is set to remain at the helm at Ibrox until the new year, when Rangers will re-assess the situation.

Murty has done a relatively impressive job as Rangers boss, but the Light Blues were beaten 3-1 by St. Johnstone in their last outing.

Rodgers, meanwhile, will be pitting his wits against McInnes at the weekend.

Celtic are due to take on Aberdeen tomorrow, in a match between the top two sides in the Scottish Premiership table.
