Celtic’s Patrick Roberts celebrates after scoring
Brendan Rodgers has largely dismissed any comparison between Patrick Roberts and Raheem Sterling, and instead claimed that the Celtic loanee reminds him of Sterling’s Manchester City teammate David Silva, The Scottish Sun reports.
The Northern Irishman is weighing up his options ahead of the summer after recently being appointed as the new boss at Parkhead.
And he has seemingly confirmed that the 19-year-old has a key role to play for the Hoops during the rest of his loan spell, but suggested that he does not remind him of the England winger who Rodgers worked very closely with during their time with Liverpool, but rather his City teammate.
“Patrick is different to Sterling although similar to him in that he is young. Raheem is speed, wing play, Patrick is more a David Silva type, more on the inside,” he told The Scottish Sun.
“He looks like he has an eye for goal.
“He’s very young and he looks a talent.”
As the Bhoys boss suggests, the former Fulham man appears to be more comfortable trying to beat defenders using his skill and tremendous close control rather than trying to use his pace to gain the upper hand.
And that strategy has paid off this past season. He scored six goals including a brace in the important win against Hearts in April and another two goals in the win over Aberdeen that confirmed that the title would be remaining at Celtic Park for another year.
And with Rodgers suggesting that Roberts has similar characteristics to Silva, who has unquestionably been one of the most impressive players in the Premier League over the past few years, it appears that the youngster is set to be a hugely important member of the squad before he returns to the Etihad next summer.
